Another (newer) benchmark that compares the performance of JPA implementations and databases has been published: http://www.jpab.org It covers many JPA ORM providers (Hibernate, EclipseLink, OpenJPA and DataNucleus) and DBMS (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Derby, HSQLDB, H2, HSQLite, ObjectDB) that are available in Java.
